Pere Gimferrer nació en 1945 en Barcelona. Desde 1970 escribe en catalán, pero ya anteriormente había obtenido con Arde el mar el premio Nacional de Poesía en 1966. Con L´espai desert (1977) ganó y el . En 1985 fue elegido para sustituir a V. Aleixandre, miembro de la Real Academia Española de la Lengua.
